•    Old Boys Club?

Not long in from the Other Job this afternoon, to hear about comments that Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray made regarding female linesman Sian Massey in Saturday’s match between Wolves and Liverpool. I watched the morning news before I left and I thought this was something that wasn’t going to go away quietly, and I’m glad to hear it hasn’t. Have a read and listen to some of the comments made between the two presenters here, when they thought their mics were turned off. Apparently they disagreed with a ruling she made in Saturday’s match. It seems, simply because Sian is a woman, she would’ve had no idea what the off-side rule meant and needed it explained to her. I know plenty of blokes who still can’t explain the off-side rule to me. Although I couldn’t explain it, give me a diagram and a pen like they do on the telly and I’ll show you. Richard Keys also made comments about West Ham’s vice-chairman Karren Brady, who, in a seperate incident, dared to complain about sexism in the game of football. “Yeah”, he says, “do me a favour, luv.” You can just imagine another one of their (supposedly secret) conversations, “Women’s movement? Wassat, when they all rush to the sales?”

Andy Gray I’m not so suprised at but Richard Keys was a shock. A gentleman I thought. And before anybody has a go, no, it’s not because Andy Gray’s a Scotsman, remember Mr. La Rue is Scottish, but somehow I wasn’t suprised when I heard he was involved. Channel 5 news has just showed him making more sexist remarks to someone else, again, when he thought his mic was switched off. I was never too keen on him. Funnily enough, nor has Mr. La Rue. He can’t see why I’m suprised, he says they’re all part of the Old Boys Club.

I’m happy to hear that Sky has taken this seriously and banned them both from tonight’s Bolton ahd Chelsea game. There are calls to sack them, which I disagree with. At the end of the day, they are good at their jobs. But I am glad they’re being disciplined. In an age where women are making such great stride to be considered equals among men, you get sexist twits like these two who think women are best seen (in the kitchen perhaps) and not heard.

You know the ironic thing? Sian Massey made a tough call but it turns out she was spot on in her decision.

Gordon Brown gentlemen? Learn a lesson or two.
